Trump Seeks to Take Away Citizenship - Vote !

Our nation, and the 14th Amendment of our Constitution, were built on the promise that no matter who you are or where you come from - you can build a brighter future for your family on American soil. President Trump’s claim today that he can roll back a constitutionally protected birthright is not only an absurd, racist conspiracy, it is driven by a strategy to gin up his base, against you. 

I know Donald Trump wishes he could take my citizenship away from me. My mother came here and forged a better life for her family, but Donald Trump would take away the promise that you can be an American no matter where you come from. 

Donald Trump is attacking the very idea that we are a nation of immigrants who build vibrant communities that contribute to the rich fabric of America.

This President is quick to forget his own immigrant past. But he doesn’t see Latino immigrants as entitled to the American dream like his grandparents were. He sees us as less than, browner, rapists, thieves and criminals. 

We are not. We are voters, and we are going to take our power back on November 6th. 

Donald Trump is trying to take away citizenship from a whole generation of Latinos being born in the United States. We cannot let that happen. Please vote. Please get your neighbors to vote. Make it count.

Kevin de León Responds to Trump

On November 9th, 2016, many of us woke up feeling like strangers in a foreign land; abandoned by Donald Trump's dark vision for the future of America - one that included some, and excluded many.

By a margin in the millions, Californians overwhelmingly rejected politics fueled by resentment, bigotry, and misogyny and embraced a resistance fueled by diversity and inclusivity. 

Last night San Diego joined the majority of Californians in supporting SB54, which protects immigrant families and keeps our communities safe. 

Yesterday, Trump brought a gaggle of Republican, anti-immigrant politicians from California to the White House, to plot against the policies that keep all of our residents safe. 

The entire meeting was disappointing, but when President Trump called immigrants "animals," it became offensive. 

Our hardworking immigrant families aren’t “animals”, Mr. President. 

The families you’re tearing apart are people, just like you. No matter how hard you try, you can’t strip away their humanity.

Mr. President, you're lying through your teeth because you're terrified Republicans will lose control of Congress. I have news for you: California -- the largest state in the union and the strongest driver of our nation’s economy -- will make sure they do.

Republicans Seek to Win by Attacking Immigrants/ Sanctuary

A Matter of Concern 

In the race for U,S. Senate it is quite clear that Diane Feinstein will win the primary and move on to the general election.  The critical question is who will come in second in the primary and move on to the general election in our top two system.

Until yesterday this was not a significant issue.  It looked like Kevin de León was well ahead and would come in second and thus move on to the Fall election contest.  As you may know Kevin de León was the principal author of the California Values Act- or Sanctuary bill.  He has been a leader in defense of immigrant communities.  As Senate pro tem he was also been a leader in favor of a number of issues including passing a bill for Health Care for Alllater blocked in the Assembly, and a progressive budget among a number of issues. https://www.kevindeleon.com/about-kevin

As of April 26 poll by the Institute for Government Studies at U.C. Berkeley, de Leon only leads Republican James P. Bradley  by 1 point, it is a statistical tie.  Bradley is running on an America First campaign.  Bradley if focused on opposing sanctuary legislation and this position is very popular among Republicans and conservatives.  He supports “taking America and California back” and America First. His web page points to the Hispanic population as a cause for alarm, ( they are by far the largest population group by ethnicity). 

The race for second place today is between Kevin de León and James P. Bradley. http://jbradley2018.com  The race is significant because the November race will either be between Diane Feinstein’s a moderate Democrat  and the campaign of a right wing provocative Republican, or it will be between Feinstein and Kevin de León a well established, experienced  candidate who has defended immigrants’ rights, jobs  and the multicultural California. 

In the race for Governor the leading Republican candidate is making a similar argument.

John Cox is a businessman and a Republican with a shot, after the June primary, of being one of the two candidates on the November ballot for governor. California Today has been doing occasional question-and-answer sessions with candidates for office.

Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles, introduced SB54 shortly after Trump's election to cut off most interactions between federal immigration agents and local police and sheriff's officers. Following sharp dissent from law enforcement officials and Brown's intervention, it was scaled back significantly.

The final version prohibits law enforcement officials from asking about a person's immigration status or participating in immigration enforcement efforts. It also prohibits law enforcement officials from being deputized as immigration agents or arresting people on civil immigration warrants.

Several of the compromises were criticized by immigrants’ rights activists.

SACRAMENTO – Announcing a campaign to erase the stain of Proposition 187, the most mean-spirited proposition in California’s history, today, June 4, 2014, legislative leaders announced Senate Bill 396 to repeal Proposition 187.

“Today we remember the xenophobic sentiments that spurred Proposition 187, and we announce Senate Bill 396 to erase its stain from our law books. California will lead the country forward to a brighter day where immigrants are treated with dignity and given an opportunity to thrive,” said Senator Kevin de León, author of Senate Bill 396.
Irvis Orozco, a UC Davis student and Undocumented Student Activist spoke out, "If Prop 187 had been instituted and not found unconstitutional, I would have been denied the chance to get an education and become a leader in California and the nation that I love.”
